Women's Big Bash League side Brisbane Heat said Jemimah Rodrigues asked to be relieved from the T20 event so as to be with her India teammate Smriti Mandhana, who is going through a difficult time.
Mandhana's father was recently hospitalised on the eve of her wedding. The health emergency led to the postponement of the India vice-captain's wedding with musician Palash Muchhal.
"Rodrigues will stay in India to support her teammate, and the Heat has agreed to her not returning for the final four games of the WBBL season," Brisbane Heat said in a statement.
Terry Svenson, CEO of Brisbane Heat, said that the club was more than willing to agree to her request to remain in India. "The Heat club obviously wish her and Smriti Mandhana’s family all the best for the future.
“Jemi told us she was disappointed not to be coming back and has passed on her appreciation to the club and the Heat fans for being so understanding of the circumstances. She has been in touch with the players and wished them all the best for the rest of their games,” Svenson said.
Delhi Capitals retained Rodrigues in the Women's Premier League, while Mandhana will again represent the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in India's domestic T20 league set to begin next February.
