Lucio, former captain of Brazil's men's football team, was admitted to the intensive care unit of a hospital in Brasilia with multiple burns to his body sustained from a domestic accident. According to reports, the accident was caused by a chimney explosion.
"He is stable, conscious, and receiving all necessary medical care," said a post shared on Lucio's social media handles, which was subsequently reposted by his partner Marilia Forgiarini.
"His injuries are being treated with specialised care, and his clinical condition is evolving positively.
"We are immensely grateful for the affection, prayers and messages of support we have received at this delicate time. We ask for respect for our family's privacy and will inform any relevant news through official channels. With faith, strength and God's support, he will recover soon," said the message shared by Forgiarini.
Lucio, 47, was one of the finest centre-backs of his generation. He won the 2002 World Cup with Brazil and had a celebrated club career, most notably with Bayern Munich in Germany and Inter Milan in Italy.
After his best days, Lucio competed in a season in the Indian Super League with FC Goa. He recently participated in an exhibition match featuring Brazil Legends and India All Stars in Chennai. On March 30, Lucio played alongside Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, and I M Vijayan, among others.
