Former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia has been outraged by the national team’s poor performances. India haven't scored a goal in their last three matches, including a 2-0 friendly defeat to Thailand, followed by a 1-0 loss to Hong Kong in the qualifiers this month.
"It's very painful to see... we are definitely struggling now to even qualify for the Asia Cup, which we've been qualifying for regularly," Bhutia told a news agency. "Countries like Uzbekistan, Indonesia and Jordan have qualified for the World Cup, and we are still struggling for the Asia Cup. Very unfortunate.”
The iconic striker holds the All India Football Federation (AIFF) responsible for the decline. He wants AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey to resign and the system to be overhauled. "Kalyan Chaubey has destroyed Indian football. Chaubey has to resign and leave. He has completely destroyed it. Three General Secretaries in two-and-a-half years -- the entire structure, the system will have to be changed," said the former Indian striker. Bhutia lost to Chaubey in the AIFF presidential election in September 2022.
"Controversy after controversy, corruption charge... even after months now, we don't know who the I-League winner is," said Bhutia, referring to the ongoing legal battle between Inter Kashi and Churchill Brothers for the men’s second division title.
Manolo Marquez’s India are in danger of missing out on the 2027 Asian Cup as they sit bottom of Group C with a point from two matches. India’s next match is against Singapore on October 9. Meanwhile, India ranked 127 in the world are likely to slip to 133 in the next update.
