The two Premier League clubs Diogo Jota represented have ensured that the Portuguese forward, who died in a car crash earlier this month, is fondly remembered forever.
Wolverhampton Wanderers, who signed Jota from Porto in the 2017-18 season, have paid tribute to their former player by inducting him into the club's Hall of Fame. Earlier, Jota's last club, Liverpool, permanently retired his No 20 shirt.
"Diogo was not only a phenomenal footballer, but someone who carried himself with humility and kindness throughout his time at Wolves, and will be sorely missed by all of us," Wolves' director of football administration Matt Wild said in a statement.
Liverpool said the No 20 shirt won't be used at any level, even in women's team and academy. "I believe this is the first time in Liverpool Football Club’s history that such an honour has been bestowed upon an individual," said Michael Edwards, CEO of football at Liverpool.
"Therefore, we can say this is a unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person. By retiring this squad number, we are making it eternal -- and therefore never to be forgotten."
Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 and was a fan favourite. The 28-year-old and his brother Andre, who played for Penafiel in the Portuguese second division, died in the crash in northwestern Spain on July 3.
