Will Lionel Messi play in the 2026 FIFA World Cup? That is a question most football fans have wanted an answer to, yet the man himself and his Argentine national coach have refused to confirm it.
Messi helped Argentina win their third World Cup in 2022 and will be expected to turn up for next year's edition to be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada from June 11 to July 19.
"In principle, everything is going well, but as he says, there's still time left," said Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni ahead of the World Cup draw in Washington.
"Although it may seem like the World Cup is near, six months is a long time. Let's hope he's doing well and makes the decision that's best for him. He has earned the right to decide," Scaloni said.
Messi himself has been tight-lipped about his participation, repeatedly reminding the world that he is 38 and not getting younger.
"I hope I can be there. I've said before that I'd love to be there," Messi said in an interview with ESPN. While that is reassuring, the iconic attacker said, "At worst, I'll be there watching it live, but it will be special."
Messi is Argentina's talisman, with 115 goals, and his presence on the field will be vital for the South Americans in their bid to defend the World Cup they won after 36 years.
