Manorama to honour Asiad medal-winners with gold medals

Kochi: Malayala Manorama will honour Malayali athletes and players who raised India's prestige at the recently concluded Asian Games with glittering performances. They will receive gold medals at the award function to be held in Kochi next week.

The players to be honoured at the event are medal-winning athletes Jinson Johnson, Mohammed Anas, Kunju Mohammed, V K Vismaya, V Neena, P U Chitra, hockey team captain P R Sreejesh, and squash stars Deepika Pallikkal and Sunaina Kuruvilla.

Jinson Johnson, from Chakkittapara in Kozhikode, had pocketed gold in the 1,500 m and a silver in the 800 m. Mohammed Anas from Nilamel in Kollam won individual silver in 400 m and two more silver as part of the 4x400 men's and mixed relays. Kunju Mohammed from Mannarcaud in Palakkad was also in the men's relay team.

Vismaya, of Kankol in Kannur, was part of the women's 4x400 m relay team that struck gold. Neena, a resident of Mepayyur in Kozhikode, earned silver in long jump.

P U Chitra from Mundoor in Palakkad won bronze medal in women's 1,500 m.

The Indian hockey men's team led by Sreejesh, a resident of Kizhakkambalam in Ernakulam, settled for bronze at the Asiad. Deepika and Sunaina, both settled in Chennai, were in the women's squash team that bagged silver at the Games held in the Indonesian cities Jakarta and Palembang.
