Keralite Alphia James has become World No. 1 in mixed doubles in the latest Para Badminton rankings. Alphia and her mixed doubles partner Prem Kumar Ale overtook the Chilean pair of Jaime Aranguiz and Man Kei To to reach the No. 1 spot.

"At the top of the world," posted Alphia on her Instagram. "Thank God for making me the No. 1 in mixed doubles. Without your blessings, I wouldn’t be here," she added.

Alphia, a native of Muvattupuzha, finished on the podium in five BWF events in the last six months, including claiming first place in the Indonesia Para-Badminton International last September. Recently, Alphia and Omair Muhammed bagged a silver medal at the Bahrain International.

Alphia was a national-level basketball player before an injury left her paraplegic during her higher-secondary school days. After more than a year of hospitalisation, Alphia showed the courage to take up para sports and has become one of India's finest para-badminton players.
