Former national athlete Jitto Mathew and his children were the centre of attraction of a 10 km run from Ramakkalmedu to Nedumkandam in Idukki district as part of a campaign to raise awareness against drugs.

The Department of Sports organised the run as part of its 'Kick Drugs, Say Yes to Sports' campaign, which is being conducted statewide.

Jitto’s eldest, Asha Mol, a class three student of St Thomas School, Irattayar, is no stranger to running and has participated in similar events. The middle one, Joel, has been competing since class one, while this was the first competitive run for the youngest, 7-year-old Anugraha, who took part confidently and enthusiastically.

Jitto, a physical education teacher at the Irattayar school, inspires his children, who affectionately call him "Jittappan." “Watching Jittappan run made me want to run too,” said 8-year-old Asha Mol, beaming with pride. Jitto’s wife, Akhila, is a physical education teacher at St George HSS, Vazathope.

Like most parents, Jitto is concerned about the growing influence of drugs on the younger generation. “It’s heartbreaking to see drugs ruining the future of our youth,” Jitto said. “Awareness programmes in schools are crucial, and this state-led campaign is a commendable initiative,” he said. Jitto emphasised his responsibility, both as a teacher and a father, to contribute to such efforts.

Jitto’s life is deeply rooted in athletics. He won several medals at school, college, state, and national-level competitions. Jitto says he turned down the offer for a government job in recognition for his sporting excellence, to remain a physical education teacher at the local school. He is driven by passion to inspire children through sports and steer them away from harmful habits like drug abuse.
