It was a day of mixed fortunes for Indian singles stars in the Malaysia Masters. While Kidambi Srikanth entered the quarterfinals in style, Malayali star H S Prannoy made a tame exit on Thursday.

Former World No. 1 Srikanth defeated Ireland’s Nhat Nguyen 23-21, 21-17 in 59 minutes to advance from the pre-quarterfinal stage. But Thiruvananthapuram native Prannoy lost 9-21, 18-21 to Japan’s Yushi Tanaka in a game that lasted just 39 minutes.

Two other Indian singles players exited in the pre-quarterfinal stage; Ayush Shetty lost to France's Toma Popov 13-21 17-21 and Sathish Kumar Karunakaran lost 14-21 16-21 to Christo Popov of France. Srikanth will take on Toma Popov in the quarterfinals on Friday.

In mixed doubles, Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila advanced to the quarterfinals with a 21-17, 18-21, 21-15 victory over France's Lea Palermo and Julien Maio. They will take on China’s Jiang Zhen Bang and Wei Ya Xin.
