Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu made a stellar return to the international arena by striking gold in the Commonwealth Championships in Ahmedabad on Monday.
The ace weightlifter set a Championship record with a total lift of 193kg (84kg + 109kg) to claim gold in the women's 48kg category. The previous Commonwealth Championship record was 14kg lighter.
Chanu had been sidelined with an injury since the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she finished fourth. Chanu was a silver medallist at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
"I am truly delighted to win the gold medal here because this is my first international event after the Olympics and in the 48kg category," Chanu posted on social media.
Chanu had competed in the 48kg category till 2018, by which time she won a world championship and two Commonwealth Games medals. "I had doubts if I will be able to give the same performance I did in this weight," she said.
"This victory reflects hard work, my coaches’ guidance, and the nation’s encouragement. It’s a big confidence boost ahead of the World Championships, and I’ll keep giving my best to make India proud," said the 31-year-old.
