The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow but strategically vital maritime chokepoint that connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. The waterway, about 21 miles wide at its narrowest point, lies between Iran to the north and Oman and the United Arab Emirates to the south. Roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil consumption and around 20% of global liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade passes through this corridor every day.
