The Idukki District Tourism Promotion Council is exploring the idea of reviving the railway. The initial idea is to construct a five-kilometre long monorail.
In its days of glory, the Munnar monorail extended 35 km from Munnar town to Top Station across mountains and valleys.
It was the British who built the Munnar-Mattupetty monorail lines. It was the easiest way to transport tea and other products to Mattupetty.
