The incident happened soon after the branch located on the Hosur-Bagalur Road was opened for business around 10am. The six-member gang, who covered their faces to hide their identities, held the staff members at gunpoint with arms tied.
Burglars struck a bank near here and got away with 4.5 kg of gold ornaments and Rs 4.5 lakh in cash by breaking into the strong room using a gas- cutter.
Puthenveettil Anil (25) of Krishnapuram Vayal was soon arrested in connection with the case. According to the police, Anil had visited the bank one week ago along with his girlfriend as part of the preparations to carry out the robbery.
The child's father 36-year-old Sugnesh noticed unusual light and movement at the ATM counter and alerted his neighbours.
The robberies had netted the gang Rs 25 lakh from a State Bank of India ATM at Irumpanam near Kochi and another Rs 10 lakh from a South Indian Bank facility at Koratty in Thrissur .
Kochi City Police Commissioner M P Dinesh said the same gang is suspected in both crimes because of the similarities of the heist.
