Witnessing the splendours of Oman with Priya Varrier

Actor Priya Varrier who became an overnight internet sensation is very active on social media and keeps sharing her travelling pictures. Recently she shared a picture of the famous Bimmah Sinkhole in Muscat. She had posted other pictures from Muscat last week. People in Oman call Bimmah Sinkhole 'Hawiyyat Najm'. It is located in the eastern Muscat governorate of Oman, a few kilometres from Tiwi, near the Al Sharqia region on the highway to Sur. The sinkhole was formed by a collapse of the surface layer due to the dissolution of the underlying limestone. However, locals used to believe this sinkhole in the shape of a water well was created by a meteorite, hence the Arabic name Hawiyyat Najm which means "the deep well of the (falling) star”.

There is a park here with a protective fence. The local municipality also provides toilet facilities for visitors. There is access to the waterfront and playgrounds for children.

It is about 50 m wide, 70 m long, and an average of 20 m deep. It is located between the coastal cities of Haibab and Bimmah, about 600 meters from the sea. As the limestone layers at the bottom dissolved in the water, the topsoil collapsed and transformed into a body of water.

Most of the tourists visit this place on weekends. There are several picnic tables inside the park. The sinkhole can also be used for swimming as per the instructions of the authorities and for activities like cliff jumping.

Oman is an exotic destination filled with incredible attractions and cities. The capital of Muscat is by far the most popular destination, but it only contains a small part of what makes Oman great. If you’re thrilled by desert landscapes, incredible mountain ranges, historic forts, and warm beaches throughout the year, then make Oman the next destination on your travel bucket list.
