Alappuzha's USP is its numerous and scenic water bodies -- be it beaches, canals or the Vembanad Lake. Dubbed as the 'Venice of East', it is the perfect place to have that laidback holiday amid the picturesque backwater destinations.

Alappuzha has more to offer than the canoes and country boats slowly drifting through the canals. The district treasures a long coastline with a few beautiful beaches, each offering a unique experience to the visitors.

Here are five beaches in Alappuzha that you should definitely visit:

Valiazheekkal beach

A destination swarming with tourists might put off those looking for a quiet break. Valiazheekkal beach is apt for those seeking quietude. As this scenic beach is yet to find its spot on the tourism map, it is one of the most unknown and untouched beaches in the district. It is takes over an hour to reach the spot from Alappuzha town via NH 66.

Marari beach

Located 11 km away from Alappuzha, Marari beach is the perfect hangout spot for families. Owing to the spectacular view, Marari has been a regular presence in Malayalam films. It is a pleasure to sit and just watch the sea from the shades of the coconut trees on Marari beach. You can either go by car or get a KSRTC bus from Alappuzha town to the Mararikulam Junction. It is a few minutes walk to the beach from the Junction.

Thottappally

This one needs no introduction. The Thottappally beach and the fishing harbour of Purakkad was immortalised with the film and novel 'Chemmeen'. About 10 km ahead on the national highway is the famous Ambalapuzha Srikrishna temple.

Andhakaranazhi

Andhakaranazhi, a small coastal village in Alappuzha, around 30 km from Kochi, is an ideal getaway. If you hit the road route to Alappuzha from Kottayam, the ride will transport you to a different world altogether. Amid the waterlogged paddy fields, houses look like tiny islands. The famous Arthunkkal church is a major attraction en route. The seventh-century church is made of wood. Andhakaranazhi is about 20 minutes drive from the church.

Andhakaranazhi is where the backwaters meet the Arabian Sea. 'Azhi' means 'sea'.

Arthunkal beach

The place Arthunkal is famous for the pilgrim centre St. Andrew's Basilica and a scenic beach here. Arthunkal beach, which is just 15 minutes away from Marari beach, is less explored and less crowded than the latter.
