Parippuvada packs it all – happiness for the buyer, satisfaction for the seller.

Biting into a crunchy, piping hot parippuvada provides a moment of ecstasy in itself. Most of us know the drill too well – standing by the wayside kiosk, jostling your pockets for those coins, and finally getting your fingers around this small yet delectable snack.

Not just the buyers, even the sellers share the happiness on seeing the gleeful faces that gorge on these snacks.

It is not because the Kerala government imposed 1 per cent flood cess from August 1 that 77-year-old Ittappiri Bhaskaran had to jack up the price of his parippuvada by Rs 1 recently. It costs all of Rs 2 now!

The people of Urakam at Cherpu in Kerala's Thrissur district were surprised to note the price hike made by Bhaskaran who had been selling snacks for Rs 1 for years. Bhaskaran merely shrugged his shoulders and mouthed price rise.

Bhaskaran only wanted to sell his snacks for the odd coins rattling in your pockets and that will be enough for this septuagenarian to live on.

It is been 15 years since Bhaskaran fitted a glass counter on his cycle and started selling snacks. He reaches the bus waiting shed at Urakam at 12 noon every day.

He sells about 100 parippuvadas in a day. His wife Sulochana helps him in preparing the snacks. At times, he even gets orders for supplying parippuvada to wedding parties. On those days, he makes more than a thousand parippuvadas!
