Kottayam west Police Station canteen turns chic, rates unchanged

The canteen attached to the Kottayam West Police Station has received an amazing makeover. Though the interiors now resemble the restaurant of a star hotel, the rates of the food served at the canteen remain cheap as earlier. While ‘fish curry meals’ are charged a mere Rs 40, fried pearl spot is also available at the same price.

Apart from providing tasty food at rates which common people can afford, the canteen aims to attract more visitors to the walkway and Boat Jetty near the police station. Police officials believe that such measures would help improve the relations between law enforcers and the public.

As part of the renovation work carried out spending Rs 8 lakh, the kitchen of the canteen also has been modernised. The amount was obtained by the Canteen Committee members by securing a loan and collecting Rs 2,000 each from the police officers attached to the West Station.

Working hours

The police station canteen is open from 8 am to 8 pm. Apart from the regular menu, Alfam and barbeque are served between 4 pm and 8 pm. “Special seating arrangements will be made on the banks of the adjacent river for this cuisine,” said convenor of the Canteen Committee KT Anas.

There are six employees at the canteen, including two chefs who joined recently after losing their jobs abroad. The refurbished canteen was inaugurated by District Police Chief G Jayadev. Those present on the occasion included ASP Dr A Nazeem, DySP R Sreekumar and House Officer at West Police Station M J Arun.
