The season of crimson, plump strawberries has set in the misty hills of Kanthalloor. Meanwhile, tourists have been swarming the hamlets to enjoy the strawberry season. The farmers have already begun harvesting the strawberries they planted for the season. To the delight of the tourism industry, the harvest season will last for the next seven months. Tourists mainly come to Marayoor and Kanthalloor to enjoy the strawberry farms and buy fresh strawberries directly from the farmers. Most farms have begun harvesting the strawberries that were planted months ago. The farms welcome visitors to join the harvest and pluck their own strawberries.
A kilogram of fresh strawberries cost up to Rs 600. Tourists visiting Kanthalloor can taste the freshly plucked strawberries before buying them. Besides, some farmers make value-added products like strawberry jams and strawberry crush. Now, strawberry farming is widely done in Kanthalloor as farm tourism has become extremely popular here. Farmers see tourism as a great source of a market for their products. Plums are also harvested here from May to June. Vattavada near Kanthalloor also has tunnel berry farming, which involves growing strawberries, blueberries and raspberries in controlled environments using materials like plastic in controlled settings to protect plants from diseases, inclement weather and pests.
