Kerala’s northern district of Kasaragod, known in the tourism circles as the home of ‘Bombay’ movie fame Bekal Fort and beach, Ananthapura Lake Temple and Ranipuram hill station, is turning into a haven of homestays of late. Many Kasargod natives have been converting their houses into comfortable homestays for tourists by registering themselves under the tourism department. There are many unregistered homestays, too. As per reports, there are 28 registered homestays in the district.. The owners charge rates based on the facilities that are offered.
Meanwhile, the rooms in unoccupied houses are also turned into serviced villas, and there are seven such approved serviced villas in the district. Kerala’s ‘Responsible Tourism Mission Society,’ which functions under the government, provides guidelines and support for the homestay and serviced villa entrepreneurs in the district. The certified homestays and service villas of Kasaragod can be found here on the Kerala Tourism website. Around 14 homestays and 4 serviced villas are listed on the portal. The contact numbers, websites and email IDs of respective owners are also given here. You can also see the category and classification of the homestays, as ‘Diamond,’ ‘Gold’ and ‘Silver.

Some of the top-rated homestays are in Neeleswar, Bekal, Kappil and Perumbala. Alongside home-made food, air-conditioned rooms, internet facilities, swimming pools, work desk and car hire services, they also have doctor-on-call facilities. According to Kerala Responsible Tourism CEO Roopesh Kumar, homestays are allowed to have a maximum of six rooms. “Both foreigners and domestic tourists are visiting them. Moreover, the interest is not limited to homestays near popular tourist spots. Those which are around 40 km away are also generating interest.
