Kerala's yearly Gran Fondo cycling race, 'Tour of Thekkady,' organised by Kottayam KEG Bikers, was held on March 9 this year, and it lured cyclists from across India and abroad. The event, which had around 200 riders this year, had participants from the United Kingdom, New Zealand, UAE as well, this year. Bikers from Delhi, Haryana, Mumbai, Gujarat, West Bengal, and more rode to the event alongside riders from Kerala. Ride director James KV said the event saw one of its most enthusiastic turnouts ever. "It was great to see the ride growing to this level with participants from various states and countries. The race day experienced cloudy, breezy weather, which the riders enjoyed. Many first-timers also said that they enjoyed the lush green course from Kottayam to Thekkady," said James.
Cherthala native Sreenath Lakshmikanth, who has also won many medals in national-level events, won the men's race. Sreenath, who trains in Ooty, said the 'Tour of Thekkady' is one of the best races in India. "This is my second time taking part in the event. This 145 km race has almost 3000 metres of climbing. What makes the event special is its three major climbs, some of the toughest in Kerala." Lauding the organisers, Sreenath said the event was managed well despite the traffic. "There were hydration stations and backup vehicles every 40-50 km. It was great that the event also had major participation in its endurance category. Such events are important to promote a healthy lifestyle as well. Mangalore-based cyclist Gleonna Angel D'souza won the women's category. The event is organised every year on the second Saturday of March. Next year, the event date will be March 14.
