Are you craving to escape the summer heat into a green corner in Kerala? If you love flowers and walking in a field listening to the chirping of birds, head to Kandanad, a green meadow in Kochi. A sunflower field, where flowers gently sway to the calming breeze, entertaining bees and butterflies, is the highlight here, and it's just about 16 km from Kochi. It's a spot that can entertain any crowd, whether friends, families, or those looking for a quick respite from a busy day. Early mornings and evenings are the best times to visit, but the place has a lot to offer throughout the day. Here's what you should know:

What to see
The highlight of Kandanad fields is the sunflower farm, which is still a novelty in Kerala. For those used to reels portraying 'oceans of sunflowers' from outside Kerala, this might not be too exciting. However, the 'Sunflower Village' has enough to interest those who haven't seen sunflowers nearby. According to Manu Philip, the landowner, "The 'Kaveri' variety grown here is renowned for its massive size and beauty." We have been growing flowers here for the past few years, and last year, we received a great response. This urged us to plant them again this time." The field has an entry fee of Rs 20.

Overlooking the field is a small shrine dedicated to Chemmazhikkattukavu Devi Temple in the region. Alwyn Xavier, Kandanad ward member, explains, "This is the 'keezhkaavu (sub-shrine) of the Devi Temple, from where a procession takes place during its festival. Its presence adds a divine aura to the field here as well." The field also grows numerous vegetables and fruits, including multiple varieties of watermelon, shamam, bloated cucumber, salad cucumber, IR 5 rice variety, bottle gourd, bitter gourd, ladies' finger, and more.

Activity possibilities
Shooting reels, capturing photos and soaking in the countryside vibe are the main activities many visit the spot for. Many visitors can't help but notice the bounty of fresh vegetables grown here, and they often take home a basket when they leave. "Taking a stroll here in itself can be quite healing. After all, such green corners are reducing around us," says Kiran S, one of the visitors to the farm.
