Muvattupuzha: The scintillating hill sides and the serene forests of Muvattupuzha near Kerala’s Kochi are the perfect destination to enjoy a thrilling one–day trip during the holidays. The Poyali Hills, Chakkipara in Vazhakulam, Kochareekkal Caves, Shoolam Waterfalls, and Kayanad Check Dam are some of the amazing spots here. The rocky structures and the hillocks at the Poyali Hills, situated 250 feet above sea level, offer scintillating views of nature.
The soothing breeze that flows across the majestic landscape, which spans over 100 acres, offers a respite from the sweltering summer heat. A well that never gets dry and a footprint have been preserved atop the hill, adding an element of mystery to the place. Most people come to Poyali to enjoy the mind-blowing panoramic view of nature. The hilltop at Vazhakkulam is where you can enjoy the cool mists and beautiful mountains for an entire day. This hilltop doesn’t have any steep ascents or dangerous curves and is the perfect place to enjoy the 360-degree view of the pineapple city of Vazhakkulam.
What’s in store at Chakkipara
Chakkipara is shrouded in mist and the spectacular sceneries would be unveiled when the mist settles down. A popular myth says that a centaur named Chakki had lived on the rocks here. A rock structure that looks like the traditional mortar and pestle is another attraction. The legend is that the centaur had used these rocks to grind the chilies. From here, you could travel to the Kochareekkal cave complex, via Maradi – Piravom route.

Kochareekkal is an adventurous spot with an enchanting cave complex, spring and a pond. The freshwater spring that originates inside the first cave, flows downhill as a stream into the pond. The second cave is quite spacious and up to forty people can stand inside it at the same time. It is believed that these caves were the hiding place of warriors in the olden times. The beautiful Shoolam waterfalls in Maradi is just three kilometres away from here. The waterfall originates at the Maradi Hills 150 feet above the sea level and cascades down the rocky mountain before splashing through a flat bed of rocks.
The check dam at Shoolam is also a popular tourist spot. Mayiladumpara where the mysterious beauty of the woods could be enjoyed is frequently visited by nature lovers. Meanwhile, the Kayanad check dam is in Valakam panchayat on the way back to Ernakulam. The mesmerizing beauty of the Muvattupuzha River that flows through the check dam is unmatchable. The flowing waters of the Muvattupuzha River sparkles under the golden sunrays, exuding a magical ambience. This is also the spot where adventure enthusiasts gather to enjoy water sports like kayaking. The overbridge that is part of the check dam too is a favourite spot of tourists.
