It is not just a unique story that captured the audience’s attention in the Malayalam movie Eko, starring Sandeep Pradeep. The beautiful location's backdrop also plays an equally important role. The breathtaking place, portrayed in the movie as the Karnataka border, is Uppukunnu in Kerala's Idukki district. Though the area has not traditionally been too touristy, it has now found a place in the hearts of travel enthusiasts, thanks to the movie. Mist, mountain ranges and a pleasant climate are its key attractions, much like elsewhere in Idukki. Let’s explore the sights of Uppukunnu, often dubbed as Kerala’s Switzerland.

Uppukunnu's stunning views
Munnar is a usual go-to destination for those who plan their December vacation trips. What they look for is a winter-like, misty climate to enjoy the end of the year. Perhaps this year, tourists can consider clubbing Uppukunnu, too, with the usual destinations.

Uppukunnu offers a great experience not only for those who come for the cold weather but also for trekking enthusiasts. Situated about 3,200 feet above sea level, it has hilly meadows, a wintry breeze, and stunning mountain views that add to its charm.

Origin of the name
Uppukunnu comprises Aruvipara and Muramkettipara. It is said that the name Uppukunnu originated from the scattered pebbles in this area, resembling rock salt. Located 30 kilometres from Thodupuzha, the area is surrounded by natural beauty, with the Chelakkadu, Aruvipara, and Theeravakunnu temples nearby.

What to be cautious of
The sights from Uppukunnu indeed defy description. Kulamavu Dam, Cheruthen Mari Waterfall and Malankara Reservoir are visible from here, along with distant views of Poomala, Kudayathur, Arakkulam and Thumbachi. Visitors, however, must be cautious around steep rocks and gorges, as slips can be dangerous. Wild tuskers, monkeys, and bison are also often spotted in the area, so be alert. The sunset in Uppukunnu is an experience worth enjoying at least once.

The Sreelakshmi Rock
The Sreelakshmi Rock near Vagamon is another location that adds beauty to Eko's frames. Apart from Eko, films like Charlie, Ordinary, and Joseph have also been shot here. The site is located in Peerumedu taluk along the Kanjaar–Pullikkanam Road. The viewpoint at Pullikkanam offers a bird’s-eye view of the road and surrounding areas. Since many visitors do not frequent it, the place exudes a calm and serene atmosphere. Mist, cool breezes, and silence make it a delightful experience, especially for solo travellers. Visitors, however, should be cautious of occasional strong winds.
