Kumarakom lights up to welcome tourists for the New Year holiday season

The quaint countryside of Kumarakom is decked with beautiful illuminations and other Christmas decorations to welcome tourists to the grand festivities. It is assumed that Kumarakom is likely to mint a whopping Rs 20 crore as income from hotel and resort bookings during the New Year holiday season. The hotels, resorts and homestays here are completely booked since last Wednesday. Rooms are not available in Kumarakom at least until January 3.
Booking income
There are 35 small and big hotels and resorts, including a five-star hotel in Kumarakom. Meanwhile, 1,150 rooms are available in all these hotels. Five-star hotels have 275 rooms, while four-star hotels have 405 rooms. Three-star hotels in Kumarakom have 315 rooms, while 80 homestays and 75 small hotels are available here.
The room rent for two persons in a five-star hotel, including breakfast, ranges between ₹25,000 and ₹ 27,000 per day. ₹12,000 – 15,000 has to be paid to book a room in a four-star hotel. Guests could book rooms at a three-star hotel for ₹8,000–10,000. Homestays are available for ₹3,000–5,000, while accommodation can be booked in small hotels for ₹1,500–2,000. With this rate card, the tourism sector in Kumarakom is likely to earn ₹1.67 crore per day in room rent alone. An average of ₹20 crore could be earned as all rooms in Kumarakom are booked from December 23 to January 3, 2026.
Houseboats
110 houseboats are operating in Kumarakom. Tourists who couldn’t book rooms in hotels or resorts are staying in houseboats. Houseboats can be hired for a day for ₹15,000–25,000. Meanwhile, tourists could choose from houseboats with one to seven rooms. ₹8,000 – 10,000 is charged per person for a ride on the lake during the day. Additionally, ₹500–600 would be charged for food. Houseboats in Kumarakom are also fully booked during these days and are expected to earn ₹1–3 crore.
New Year package
Foreign tourists arriving at Kumarakom are mainly from various European countries. Meanwhile, North Indians too find Kumarakom extremely charming. Most of these tourists come here by purchasing lucrative packages. They plan to celebrate Christmas in Kumarakom and then travel to destinations like Munnar, Thekkady, and Alappuzha for New Year celebrations. Meanwhile, some tourists prefer to stay in Kumarakom from Christmas to the New Year.
