The breeding season for the Nilgiri Tahr has begun at Rajamala in Munnar, a major habitat for the rare species in the Eravikulam National Park. Forest officials have found more than three newborn kids in the Rajamala tourism zone already this season. Compared to last year, births began in the first week of January.  Last year, newborn kids were found at Rajamala only from January 14 onwards.

The Eravikulam National Park would be closed as the breeding season of the Nilgiri Tahr has begun. The national park will be shut from February 1 to March 31 as soon as the chief wildlife warden gives approval. Tourist entry would be banned in Rajamala, a prominent tourist zone, during the national park's breeding season. 827 Nilgiri Tahr were found in the survey conducted in April last year. Among them, 144 were newborn kids.
