As part of the security arrangements for the Makaravilakku festival at Sabarimala, tourists will not be permitted to travel to Gavi via the Kochandi check post in Angamoozhi from January 12 to 15, said Gudrical Range Officer A S Ashok. The eco-tourism spot near Kumily closes every year during the festival. There are no other entry points to the tourist spot, which draws visitors primarily for its scenic journey through dense forest terrain.

Once open...
Those wishing to reach Gavi in private vehicles must register online in advance and obtain a travel pass, issued at the Angamoozhi check post in Pathanamthitta district. Bus services to Gavi are available from Pathanamthitta. KSRTC's budget tourism trip also conducts regular trips to the spot.

What tourists get to see
Beyond the Angamoozhi check post, travellers first encounter the Moozhiyar Dam, where sweeping vistas of forest and water greet the eyes. The massive penstock pipes stand out against the lush greenery, visible from a considerable distance. Further along lies the Sabarigiri Hydro Electric Project, of which the Moozhiyar Dam is an integral part. The route then leads to the Kakki Dam, the expansive catchment area that continues to captivate visitors.

Past the Kakki Dam is Echo Point, a location created during rock blasting for the dam’s construction. Sounds made here reverberate three times. The surrounding hilltops are also home to wild buffalo, often seen grazing in their natural habitat.

Next comes the Anathode Dam, a vital structure that channels water for the Sabarigiri project. During the catastrophic floods of 2018, when towns and villages were submerged, the dam's shutters had to be opened to release excess water. Travelling past a series of majestic dams and rolling grasslands, visitors finally arrive at Gavi.

Preserving the wilderness
At Gavi, travellers are greeted by breathtaking natural beauty. Trekking and other off-road activities are not permitted along the route, and travel is allowed only on the main road. Vehicles are strictly prohibited on forest paths branching from the main road. Forest officials will seize any vehicle found in violation of this rule and take legal action.
