For those who have never experienced Kerala's monsoon season, connecting with the emotions and challenges it evokes can be tough. From the sound of the rain's arrival and the smell of monsoon-embraced grass to the winds that make one manoeuvre umbrellas in different directions, the rainy season brings tremendous experiences for a newbie. Generally, the rains also bring their perils, such as waterlogged roads and occasional floods. However, Kerala also has a handful of beautiful monsoon spots where one can experience the season safely. Babu Rengaraj, Head of the Tourism Department at the Kerala Institute of Tourism and Travel Studies (KITTS), Thiruvananthapuram, shares a few safe monsoon spots in Kerala for tourists.

North Kerala
a) Bekal Fort, Kasaragod
A tourist site with paved walking areas and well-maintained premises, overlooking the sea, its fort can offer a good view of the rain on land and sea, without risking your safety. The majestic, royal setting can add to the charm. The fort is also easily accessible even in the rainy season.

b) Thalassery Town, Kannur
While coastal areas aren't generally safe during the monsoon season, Thalassery's elevated topography makes it a safe option. Go on a heritage walk that covers its fort, colonial-era streets, temples, churches and mosques, along with its local delicacies. Check out its popular spots like the Grafitti Street. The region's beauty is amplified during the monsoon season and offers stunning coastal views.

Central Kerala
a) Kollengode, Palakkad
Anand Mahindra's favourite spot, Kollengode in Palakkad, is renowned for its 'village beauty' vibe. Monsoon season transforms it into an even more rustic paradise to be explored on foot. Its paddy fields, mist-covered hills, village homes and peaceful vibe are not to be missed.

b) Marayoor, Idukki
A year-round destination, Marayoor is located between Munnar and Kanthalloor, between the Anamalai and Palani Hills. It doesn't receive much rain, but still has enough to let you experience the monsoons in a safe, moderate fashion. It also has enough for photographers at its Nooruveedu viewpoint, Chinnar area, dolmens, dry deciduous forest, sugarcane fields and villages. Those interested can also undertake a 'sandal walk' along the fenced roads safely.

South Kerala
a) Thiruvananthapuram city
The city, sandwiched between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats, is insanely beautiful in all seasons. The royal roads, Museum grounds, Kanakakkunnu Palace, Manaveeyam street... there are many spots that turn glamorous following a rain. The cool breeze, cloudy weather, wet, tree-lined roads, and light showers add to this experience. If you are into the moody beach vibe, take a walk along the Kovalam beach or Shanghumugham beach road.

b) Varkala region
The beach town's lush cliffs, coconut trees, swaying walkways, and cloudy sunsets make it a great spot to visit during the monsoon season. What's more, it's not crowded either, till August, being tourist season off-season. Regardless, checking out the rain falling simultaneously in the sea and on the beach, sipping a Sulaimani from a cliffside cafe or hotel, can be quite a memorable experience.
