Malarikkal's pink water lily season almost here: Current blooming spots
Mail This Article
A wash of enchanting pink has begun to adorn the fields of the beautiful Kottayam countryside in Malarikkal, Kerala. Water lily blooms have started to appear in certain stretches of the paddy fields here, which are filled with water after the annual harvest season. Generally, the season begins around August, though it had started earlier last year. The quaint village has gradually come alive with flower vendors, tea stalls, boatmen, and more. It also introduced life jackets last year for tourists who choose to go boating here. Malarikkal is just about 13 km from the globally renowned tourism destination, Kumarakom.
Where to see water lilies now
Waterlilies have bloomed only in some areas in Thiruvayikkari, one of the many fields in Thiruvayikkari J Block, Onpathinayiram, that get filled with waterlilies during the peak season. After reaching Malarikkal, head straight on the road to reach the junction near the Onpathinayiram fields. From here, take a boat to reach the blooms. It can take about 5 to 8 minutes by boat to reach the blooming stretches. The best time to enjoy the flowers is from 6 am to 8 am.
Other things to note
a) Reach a consensus about the charge and duration of the boat ride with your boatman before boarding the boat.
b) Vehicles should be parked without causing traffic congestion.
c) Waterlilies haven’t bloomed much in the J Block Onpathinayiram fields that could be seen from the road.
d) The flowers begin to droop when the sun rises. Therefore, make sure you visit in the morning hours.
