An international travel vlogger on a mission to explore every state in India has lit up social media with his glowing observations of Kerala. Jack Heaton, known online for his engaging travel chronicles, shared that his journey through Kerala was completely distinct from anything else he had experienced in the country, declaring it his absolute favourite state.
Cleanliness and a high civic sense
Cruising through the streets of Kerala, Heaton was quick to point out how clean the roads are compared to other Indian urban hubs. He also remarked on the noticeable absence of incessant honking and chaotic noise. For Heaton, the secret behind this stark and refreshing difference lies in one key factor: education.
Literacy rates that beat the USA
"Personally, I believe the high standard of education here is the driving force behind this change," Heaton shared in his viral video. He highlighted how the emphasis on women's education has transformed the public consciousness, fostering mutual respect and an innate sense of social responsibility. This has made the state incredibly clean and its citizens deeply considerate of one another. Heaton backed his claims with striking statistics: while the adult literacy rate in the USA stands at around 79 per cent, Kerala boasts an outstanding literacy rate of 96.2 per cent, putting it well ahead of the developed Western nations in basic education metrics.
Religious harmony and rich diversity
Another defining feature of Kerala, according to the vlogger, is its beautiful tapestry of peaceful coexistence. The state is home to diverse communities living in perfect harmony, with a population that is roughly 40 per cent Hindu, 30 per cent Christian, and a significant Muslim population alongside other faiths like Jainism. Heaton noted that this seamless integration of cultures and beliefs is what truly makes Kerala beautiful. "While I have grown to love many parts of India, Kerala stands out distinctly from the rest due to its unique identity and progressive mindset," Heaton explained.
A wave of pride on social media
As Heaton's video gained traction, Malayalis and travel enthusiasts from across the globe flooded the comments section with appreciation. One user wrote, "Kerala is not just a destination; it is an emotion," while another commented, "We may not be perfect, but we are certainly leading the way in India." The warm reception from local Instagram users reflects their pride in seeing "God's Own Country" receive such global validation. This international spotlight is expected to give a massive boost to Kerala's tourism sector.
