A long holiday begins on Saturday (October 17) in Kerala. Followed by Sunday, the weekend is extended by the government holiday for Navaratri (Oct 19), followed by Mahanavami and Vijayadasami (Oct 21 and 22). Want to make the best of these days, before the year-end deadlines and commitments pile up? Here are a few travel suggestions from Kerala's District Tourism Promotion Councils and other travel stakeholders to make the most of this time of the year.
1) Paniyeliporu in Ernakulam
This eco-tourism spot that comes under Malayattoor Forest Division in Vengoor Panchayath of Ernakulam is perfect for a reasonably quiet, yet activity-packed getaway. The highlight of Paniyeliporu, which is 23 km from Perumbavoor, is a beautiful stretch of the Periyar River, filled with rocks and step waterfalls. Visitors also get to check out the 'erumaadam' or small huts on tree branches, bamboo bridges, a small waterfall and the overall serene jungle vibe.
Elephants visit here at night, but it's safe during the day. The women-friendly facility also has clean toilets and changing rooms, alongside multiple safety guards and housekeeping staff. Visit between 9 am and 4 pm.
2) 'See Ashtamudi' in Kollam
Kerala's second largest lake, Ashtamudi in Kollam, is known for its wetland ecosystem, beautiful islands, Chinese fishing nets and rich biodiversity. What's the best way to explore it? Book a 'See Ashtamudi' houseboat trip, which takes you on a 5-hour trip across the lake. Sambranikodi, the popular eco-tourism island known for its 'walk-in-water' experience and mangroves; Munroe Island clusters that have many narrow canals and groves; the Velakkamma statue, the notorious Peruman Bridge, Kakkathuruthu, friendly storks that fly along with the boats as they hunt for fish... the cruise has many experiences to offer tourists. Those interested can book the cruise at 9400050387.
3) Nettara Village of Wayanad
This lesser known village in Wayanad is located about 1.5 km from the renowned Thirunelli Mahavishnu Temple, famous as the Kashi of the South. The picturesque Nettara Bridge, paddy and arecanut fields, tribal life, the Kalindi or Papanasini River and tea estates, all of which give the village a true-blue, unspoiled, old-school vibe, await tourists here. From here, visitors also get a sweeping view of the Brahmagiri hills, one of the major ranges of the Western Ghats. Just about 7 km from here is the Pakshipathalam trekking route, known as a haven of migratory birds and the cave tunnels known as Munikal caves. The renowned Insta-famous chaayakada, 'Kuttettan's tea shop', known for its 'unniyappam' snack, is also here.
