After a break of many years, Kerala is all set to be featured in the Republic Day parade on January 26. The state's tableau features Kochi's Water Metro, the first electrically powered, integrated water-based public transport system in India. It will also feature Kerala's 100% digital literacy. Kerala's presence at the parade, after alleged exclusions in 2019, 2020, 2022, 2024 and 2025, is much-awaited by Malayalis. In 2023, Kerala had presented a tableau showcasing kalaripayattu, tribal percusion and women's literacy. The themes this year are '150 Years of Vande Mataram' and 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat.' There will be around 30 tableaus this year, from 16 states and Union Territories.
Water Metro
Kochi is the first city in India to have a Water Metro. It was launched in 2021 and connects around 15 routes in Kochi, including 10 inhabited islands within Kochi. It also integrates with feeder buses, cycling paths and metro trains. An eco-friendly public transport system that carries around 6,000 riders a day, it has about 20 electric boats and is gearing up for a fleet expansion. One of the latest proposed routes of the Water Metro is from Aluva to the Cochin International Airport, with faster boats. Last week, it also won an honourable mention at the Sustainable Transport Award by the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy.
