Alappuzha: Shortly after a few bodies of houseboat owners called off their agitation on Wednesday, houseboat employees went on a strike demanding a written confirmation on the pay revision and other benefits. The strike has forced majority of the houseboats to stop services, adversely impacting the tourism activities in the area.
The All Kerala Houseboats Owners Associations (AKHOA) and four other groups called off their indefinite strike after holding a meeting with the Alappuzha district collector on Tuesday. They withdrew the strike till June first week after getting assurance from the collector that state tourism minister Kadakampally Surendran will hold a meeting to discuss and resolve the matter.
Though CPM district secretary (in charge) R Nasser conveyed the same to representatives of the employees union, CITU and BMS decided to continue the strike till they get a written agreement mentioning the pay revision and allowances.
Boats operated by the members of the Kerala House Boat Owners Federation, which had withdrawn support to the strike, have been continuing their services as usual. The protesting workers stopped houseboats at the Punnamada Starting Point on Wednesday morning. The police had to intervene to resolve the standoff.
On Monday, the AKHOA office in the town was attacked by some unidentified persons and the North Police had registered a case in the incident.
