Thekkady is springing back to life. Even as Kerala revives from the deluge that wreaked havoc across the state, the tourist hub is regaining its magic. The first post-flood boat ride on Periyar Lake started on Saturday morning.

Visitors are returning to Thekkady once again, now that damaged roads have been restored. Thekkady holds several fascinating views for tourists, the Periyar wildlife sanctuary being the main attraction.

Lakhs of people depending on the tourism industry lost their livelihood as visitors had to abandon the favourite tourist spots during the deluge. Resorts owned by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation in Thekkady alone are understood to have suffered a loss of over Rs 1 crore.

Foreign tourists travel to the region as part of a package that includes Thekkady, Munnar and Vagamon. But as the calamity raged, most tourists stayed away from Idukki district and its hotspots as well as Wayanad, another favourite destination. The arrivals have resumed once again now.
