Kozhikode: Smoking a single puff while sitting in a coach can cause the sudden halting of trains now.

The train with most modern LHB rakes will come to automatic halt if someone smokes in an AC coach.

The new heat and smoke monitoring system set up in AC compartments to prevent fire in trains will detect the presence of smoke from cigarettes. If the smoke and heat goes beyond a level in AC compartments, it will be notified and there will be an automatic halt to the train as the system is interlinked to the engine of the train.

The Nethravati Express faced a bitter experience the other day in Tirur Railway station of Malappuram district as somebody had smoked inside the compartment. The train was brought to an immediate halt.

No smoke could be found in the train even though the Railway crew conducted a frantic search. The person who smoked might have immediately left the place when the announcement about the technical failure was made through the speaker inside the coach.

Passengers were stranded as it took some time to get the engine automatically restored to the earlier position.
