Bengaluru: The Karnataka RTC has hiked its interstate bus fare by 15% forcing the Kerala RTC to increase its charges by Rs 100 – 120 for its services from Bengaluru and Mysuru. The charges have been hiked based on the distance run by the buses inside Karnataka. Meanwhile, the revised ticket fares have already been implemented via Mysuru and Salem services. As the services via Mysuru run longer through Karnataka, the prices have soared mostly for the buses to Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasargod. Meanwhile, the services via Salem run through Karnataka only up to Attibele at the Bengaluru border. As per the transport contract between both states, if a state RTC hikes ticket fares, then the RTC of the other state too should proportionately increase their ticket price in the same routes.

No ‘change’
The shortage of change became severe after the ticket fares in the BMTC buses were hiked. The minimum charge was raised from Rs 5 to Rs 6, and the second stage fare was raised from Rs 10 to Rs 12. Earlier, the fares were unified to overcome the shortage of coins. Meanwhile, complaints have been rife that the conductors in the BMTC AC and non-AC buses refuse to allow the passengers to use digital payment (QR Code) facilities. Disputes between the passengers and conductors regarding the balance amount have become common in the buses.
