Close on the heels of the announcement of the Wayanad-Kozhikode ropeway, yet another cablecar is expected to be launched in Kerala. Manorama Online reports that the State Wildlife Board will soon give the permit for the much-awaited Pampa-Sannidhanam ropeway of Sabarimala. The ropeway will cover 2.7 km and it is expected to have five pillars of 40 to 60 metres in height. From the Malikappuram police barracks to Pampa hilltop, it will require 4.5336 hectre forest land. Around 80 trees will have to be cut down for the ropeway. Earlier, it was expected that the project would be launched by February this year, and completed by the 2026 pilgrimage season. However, it hasn't been started yet, though there were reports on its installation ceremony beginning in early 2025.
How pilgrims will benefit
Each cabin is expected to be able to carry around 500 kg. While it was earlier approved for transporting goods, the High Court later gave nod to also carry elderly pilgrims and those with disabilities. At present, there are dolly services that charge Rs 3,250 for one-way carriage and Rs 6,500 for a round trip. The pilgrims who prefer to walk from Pampa to Sannidhanam cross Neelimala, Sabari Peedam, Appachimedu and Marakkoottam to reach the temple. It can also be an eco-friendly, safe, emergency option that lets pilgrims access the temple faster, especially in the Makaravilakku season.
