The ceremonial announcement of Thrissur Pooram, known as Pooram Vilambaram, took place today. The renowned tusker Ernakulam Sivakumar carried the idol of Neythalakav Bhagavathy and ceremoniously opened the southern entrance (Thekke Nada) of the Vadakkumnathan temple, marking the official commencement of Pooram festivities. Thousands gathered at Thekke Nada to witness this grand announcement.
Braving both rain and scorching sun, crowds waited patiently for hours. Finally, when Sahya Putran (a title of reverence) Ernakulam Sivakumar carried Neythalakavilamma on his forehead and the southern entrance was opened, cheers erupted. As the tusker raised its trunk high to announce Pooram formally, Pooram enthusiasts broke into jubilant applause. Yes, Thrissur has once again welcomed another Pooram.
The morning rain cleared by noon, brightening the skies and the spirits of the Pooram lovers. Around 8 am, the ceremonial procession (ezhunnallippu) set off from the Neythalakkavu and reached the grounds of the Vadakkumnathan temple, entering through the archways to finally arrive at Thekke Nada at 1 pm. Elephant lovers had lined up in large numbers to witness the majestic tusker arrive with the accompaniment of traditional percussion ensembles (melam).
Tomorrow marks the grand day of Poorams. The day will begin with the processions (ezhunnellippu) of the constituent Poorams. Events like Elanjithara Melam (a grand percussion ensemble), Madathil Varavu, Thekkottirakkam, and the famed Kudamattam (umbrella exchange ceremony) await to enthral Pooram lovers.
