The Konkan Railway Corporation Limited will introduce a RORO (Roll On–Roll Off) facility for private cars from Kolad in Maharashtra to Verna in Goa, starting from August 23. Tourists planning a road trip in Goa or residents of the Konkan area in Mumbai can utilise this new facility. The RORO service will help the passengers avoid the boredom of long road trips while reducing road accidents and pollution. Those who live in Goa or in the Konkan regions can take their car along with them.
Timing, rates
The RORO train will take 12 hours to reach Goa from Kolad. There will be 20 specially designed wagons to transport the cars. Up to 40 cars could be transported in these wagons. Additionally, there will be third-class and second-class sitting coaches available for passengers. The authorities have set the freight charges at Rs 7875 per car. Meanwhile, the ticket in the AC compartment costs Rs 935 per head and Rs 190 in the second sitting. Up to three passengers would be allowed to travel in the train along with a car.
Minimum cars per freight
The Konkan Railway has decided to operate the service if there are at least 16 freight cars. RORO trains that carry loaded trucks from Mumbai to Mangaluru and back are already running services in the Konkan region. This service is from Kolad to Tumkur near Mangaluru. The new project aims to provide RORO service in the same model for cars.
