Island hopping made easy: Water metro heads to Kadamakkudy

Getting stranded in the Kadamakkudy islands will soon be a thing of the past. Water Metro services are set to begin operations for tourists and local commuters, with terminals at Kadamakkudy and Paliyamthuruth nearing completion. Services are expected to launch by December.

While connectivity to Kadamakkudy has improved in recent years with the construction of roads and bridges, the Water Metro aims to bridge the last-mile gap. With its serene landscapes and proximity to Kochi, Kadamakkudy has already become a popular tourist spot. The new water transport service is expected to boost tourist inflow further.

Located just 8 km from Kochi, the Kadamakkudy panchayat comprises a cluster of islands, including Valiya Kadamakkudy, Murikkal, Paliyamthuruth, Pizhala, Cheriya Kadamakkudy, Moolampilly, Puthussery, Chariyamthuruth, Chennoor, and Kothad.

Land acquisition for terminals in nearby areas — such as Mulavukad Panchayat, Ponnarimangalam, Chennoor, Kothad, Pizhala, Thundathumkadavu, Chariyamthuruth, Elamkunnapuzha, and Moolampilly — has been completed, with tender procedures currently underway.

At present, 19 boats operate across existing Water Metro terminals at Vypin South Chittoor, Cheranallur, Eloor, Vyttila, and Kakkanad. The High Court–Fort Kochi route has recorded the highest passenger traffic.

Backwaters, birdwatching and fresh fish
Kadamakkudy is known for its scenic backwaters and rich biodiversity. For those seeking a peaceful evening or birdwatching experience, the Water Metro promises a relaxed and picturesque journey. The region’s backwater cuisine, especially fresh fish and duck preparations, adds to the charm.

Additional terminals are also coming up at Vypin, Bolgatty, and Mulavukad North. A total of 14 terminals have been proposed within the Vypin Assembly constituency.
