Malappuram: The Ernakulam–Shoranur MEMU train has been extended up to Nilambur. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the launch of services for the train numbers 66325/66326. Local residents and railway passengers have highlighted the demand for a MEMU service in the region for a long time. The demand gained further momentum after the electrification of the Shoranur–Nilambur line last year.

Currently, the MEMU service departs Ernakulam Junction at 5.35 pm and arrives at Shoranur at 8.50 pm. The return trip leaves Shoranur at 3.30 am and reaches Ernakulam at 6.50 am. Information on when the extended service to Nilambur will commence, along with the revised timetable, is yet to be released. In addition, the extension of the Coimbatore–Shoranur MEMU to Nilambur and a proposal for a new MEMU service between Nilambur and Shoranur are under consideration by the railways.

MP PV Abdul Wahab stated that the demand to extend the Ernakulam–Shoranur MEMU to Nilambur has been raised for years and that he had consistently approached the Railway Minister, senior officials, and other authorities on the matter. “As a long-standing aspiration of the people becomes a reality, I am truly delighted to have been able to contribute to achieving this,” he said.

Furthermore, the Railways has decided to add two extra coaches, including four new reserved second sitting coaches, to the existing Nilambur–Kottayam–Nilambur Express from 16 August. Reservations for these additional coaches have already begun.
