Carrying multiple bags on train journeys without worrying about the weight limit may soon become a thing of the past in India. As per reports, Indian Railways is all set to roll out baggage rules in airport style, limiting the weight of luggage an individual can carry on trains. Once implemented, passengers will have to weigh their bags via electronic machines at railway stations, which would mean you will have to arrive early to board trains too! TOI reports that the scheme, which will first be implemented in major railway stations, will also charge extra from passengers whose luggage weighs more than the limit.

Proposed weight limits
Here are some of the proposed weight limits as per reports:
General coach - 35 kg
Sleeper coach - 40 kg
AC 3 Tier - 40 kg
AC 2 Tier - 50 kg
AC 1st Class - 70 kg

Current weight limits
Second class - 70 kg
Sleeper class - 80 kg
AC 3 Tier/AC Chair car - 40 kg
First class/AC 2 Tier - 100 kg
1st AC - 150 kg

Extra charges
The confirmed figures on extra charges to be implemented are yet to be released by the railways. However, speculations are rife that extra charges will have to be paid for every additional kilogram. The precise fee structure is expected to be disclosed soon.
