Kalpetta: Traffic on the Thamarassery Ghat Road, a 9-km stretch on the Kozhikode-Kollegal National Highway (NH 766), has been disrupted for the third consecutive day due to landslips at the 9th Curve near the Wayanad Gate, causing considerable inconvenience to passengers on the route.
Although the Wayanad District Administration temporarily restored traffic on Wednesday night, it was suspended twice on Thursday due to recurring debris falls. Onmanoram takes a look at the alternative routes to reach Wayanad.

Malappuram to Wayanad
For travellers heading to Wayanad from the southern regions of the state, including those from Malappuram,  the most straightforward alternative route is to use the Nilambur-Vazhikkadavu-Nadukani-Chermabadi-Vaduvanchal route.

From Vaduvanchal, those travelling to Sulthan Bathery can take the right turn, while those heading to Kalpetta and Vythiri can continue straight along the Kozhikode Road.

From Vazhikkadavu, the Nadukani Ghat road links Nilambur with the Kozhikode-Ooty Road. From here, those travelling to Ooty can turn right, while those wishing to visit Wayanad should turn left.

The roads are winding yet scenic, lined with lush tea plantations that bless your eyes on the right side of the road as you travel towards Wayanad. The approximate travel time between Nilambur and Vaduvanchal is 2 hours.

From Kozhikode
Those passengers who travel from Kozhikode to Wayanad can take two routes:
Those heading to Sulthan Bathery or Kalpetta, take the Nadukani Ghat Road. They can travel along the National Highway NH 766 up to Kunnamangalam and then deviate onto the Mukkam-Areekkode-Nilambur road (Total distance: 47 km).

Those bound for the North Wayanad region of Mananthavadi taluk can opt for the Kozhikode-Perambra-Thottilpalam-Kuttiady route (total distance approximately 110 km). The ghat road is narrow and not suitable for heavy trucks.

Kannur to Wayanad
From Kannur, there are three routes to Wayanad:
1) Periya Ghat Road: The Periya Ghat Road is the best road linking Kannur with Mananthavadi in Wayanad. The route is Kannur-Koothuparamba-Periya-Mananthavadi (82 km).
2) Palchuram Ghat Road-Kannur-Kottiyoor -Iritty- Peravoor- Boys Town-Mananthavady (80 km).
3) Kannur-Thalasseri-Mahi-Thottilpalam-Mananthavadi (around 100 km).
