Kerala has been sidelined by the Indian Railways; the state didn’t get even a single Amrit Bharat non-AC train that was launched for labourers and commoners. The first Amrit Bharat train started its service in January 2024. The Ernakulam – Howrah route was included in the first list of routes prepared for the introduction of trains. Southern Railway had reported that Amrit Bharat services may be permitted from Kerala, a significant hub of migrant labourers, to Odisha, Bihar and Assam. However, nine among the 12 Amrit Bharat trains have been allotted to Bihar. Tamil Nadu too got an Amrit Bharat train after a service was started from Jogbani in Bihar to Erode. Besides, another Amrit Bharat train is under consideration from Coimbatore to Dhanbad. Meanwhile, it is assumed that new trains are being allotted to Bihar daily, in anticipation of the elections.

Meanwhile, the regular Amrit Bharat Express service between Erode and Jogbani in Bihar – the first Amrit Bharat of South India - will begin on September 25 from Erode (16601), and three days later from Jogbani (16602). It has 50 stations, including Katihar, Patna, Jabalpur, Nagpur, Vijayawada, Perambur, Katpadi and Salem. Amrit Bharat trains have two luggage-cum-brake vans with accommodation for the differently abled, 11 general second class coaches, eight sleeper class coaches and a pantry car.
