Thiruvananthapuram is gearing up for a spectacular display of naval strength as preparations intensify for the Navy Day operational demo at Shangumukham on December 3, Wednesday, featuring ships, aircraft and submarines.

According to Commodore Viju Samuel, Southern Naval Command Chief Staff Officer, the aim is to showcase the Navy’s capabilities to the public through exercises involving ships, aircraft, and submarines. The exercises, originally scheduled for Navy Day on December 4, have been advanced by a day for the convenience of President Draupadi Murmu, who will arrive in Thiruvananthapuram on December 3 at 4.15 pm. A pavilion with a seating capacity of 8,000 will be set up for the public. Rehearsals are also already underway.

Model of INS Vikrant to be installed
A model of India’s indigenously developed aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, will be installed in the capital as part of the Navy Day celebrations. Reports suggest it will be placed near the Kerala Water Authority office.

Traffic restrictions in Thiruvananthapuram on December 3
Traffic restrictions will be enforced in Thiruvananthapuram city in connection with the Naval Day Operation demo to be staged by the Indian Navy at Shangumukham. A crowd of around 50,000 is expected to witness the demo, which will begin at 4.30 pm on December 3. The restrictions mentioned below will be in place on December 3 from 12 noon onwards.
• Access from Chakka, Kallummoodu, Station Kadavu, Valithura, Kumarichantha, and Madhavapuram to Shankumukham and Vettukad will be limited to vehicles with passes. Even pass-holders will be allowed entry only if a parking space is available.

• Vehicles of special invitees and media may proceed via the Chakka–All Saints route to Shangumukham until one hour before the event. After dropping passengers, they must park in designated lots marked in the QR code on the pass. Late arrivals must use the Eenchakkal–Kallummoodu–Ponnarapalam–Valiyathura–domestic airport route.
• Vehicles of spectators with passes should proceed via Chakka–All Saints–Balanagar Road or Chakka–All Saints–Madhavapuram–Veli Tourist Village–Vettukad, and park in designated areas. From there, Navy-arranged vehicles will transport them to Kannanthura and back after the event.

 • Vehicles of spectators without passes must be parked at designated grounds across the city. KSRTC buses will transport spectators to Vettukad to witness the Naval Day Operation demo and back to the parking grounds, starting from 1 pm, with a nominal fee.

• Those coming from Kollam, Attingal, Pothankodu and Sreekaryam areas should park their vehicles in the Greenfield Stadium ground and the Karyavattom University College parking ground
• Those coming via MC Road should park at the MG College ground.
• Motorists from Nedumangad, Peroorkkada, Shasthamangalam should park at Kavadiyar Salvation Army ground, Sanskrit College, University College, University Campus, LMS grounds.

• Motorists from Kattakkada and Thirumala should park at Poojappura ground, Vellayambalam Jimmy George ground, and Water Authority ground.
• Visitors from Parassala, Neyyattinkara, Pappanamkodu, and Karamana should park at Killipalam Boys High School, Aattukal ground, Homeo College ground, and Putharikkandam ground.
• Those from Kovalam, Poonthura, Thiruvallam, Petta, Chakka, Eenchakkal should park at Lulu Mall, Aanayara World Market, Karikkam Temple grounds.
• From Varkala, Kadaykkavur, Perumathura (coastal road): Puthenthoppu Church ground, St. Xavier’s College ground.

• Participants from schools and colleges attending the event must contact the traffic police in advance to ensure parking space.

 • Passengers heading to the airport or railway station should plan travel accordingly. Those headed to the domestic Airport should use Venpalavattam–Chakka flyover–Eenchakkal–Kallummoodu–Ponnara bridge–Valiyathura route.
• Those bound for the international airport should use Chakka–Ananthapuri Hospital–Service Road.
