The KSRTC has launched Fast Passenger bus services in the Ponmudi route, which had recently become extremely busy and crowded after the launch of the free Priyadarshini buses. Transport Minister CP John told us that fast passenger buses have been allowed on the route to ease difficulties for passengers, as visitor numbers have risen sharply. Recently, we had reported about the severe shortage of buses on this route and how they carry more passengers than their capacity on Ponmudi’s steep and precarious roads.

Meanwhile, the minister stated that the service is likely to begin today or tomorrow, depending on the availability of fast passenger buses. Additionally, the opinions of the authorities at the Nedumangad and Vithura KSRTC depots would be sought regarding the bus service schedule. Only one bus will operate this route in the initial phase. More services will be launched depending on various factors, including the revenue. The minister said that he had already instructed that more ordinary buses be added to the route to ease passengers' difficulties.

The other day, a KSRTC bus from Ponmudi was so crammed that it led to scuffles between the passengers. Passengers who were left behind managed to get into the next bus services, which were also severely crowded. The authorities failed to manage the crowd yesterday, too.

Allowing fast passenger buses on the Ponmudi route will reduce travel difficulties while significantly increasing the KSRTC’s revenue. Currently, fast passenger buses operate service up to Kallar in the Thiruvananthapuram – Ponmudi route. Meanwhile, the authorities may also consider other options, such as linking buses, to ensure passenger safety and comfort.
