Passengers flying with Lufthansa Group airlines will now need to adapt to a major change in the online check-in procedure. The German airline group has made a registered user account, known as a 'Travel ID', mandatory for anyone wishing to complete check-in via its official websites or mobile applications. Under the new system, travellers can no longer check in digitally by simply entering their booking reference and surname.

Which airlines are affected?
The new rule applies across the major carriers operating under the Lufthansa Group umbrella. This includes Lufthansa, Swiss International Air Lines, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Air Dolomiti, Edelweiss, and Discover Airlines.

Phased rollout across global routes
The Travel ID requirement is being introduced in four distinct phases to ensure a smooth transition:
• October 20: Introduced on flights originating from Schengen countries, excluding Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
• November 2: Expanded to services from airports across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (excluding the main hubs of Frankfurt, Munich, and Zurich) and other European destinations.
• November 16: Applied to flights departing from Munich and Zurich airports, as well as all services from the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
• November 30: Complete worldwide implementation, including all flights departing from Frankfurt.

How to set up a Travel ID
Creating a Travel ID is simple and free of charge. Passengers need to provide their full name, date of birth, and email address, set a password, and verify their account via email. While Travel ID integrates seamlessly with the airline group's frequent flyer programme, enrolment in Miles & More is not compulsory—a basic Travel ID registration is sufficient.

Convenience for families and group travellers
To simplify the process for families, a single Travel ID holder can complete the check-in process for all accompanying family members under the same booking. This feature also allows relatives or helpers to assist elderly passengers or those less familiar with digital tools.

Who is exempt?
The Travel ID requirement does not apply to group bookings, selected package holidays, or charter flights. Furthermore, travellers who prefer to check in at traditional airport counters or use self-service kiosks at the terminal do not need to register for an account. Frequent flyers, students, and international travellers commuting between Europe and other global destinations are advised to set up their Travel ID ahead of time to avoid last-minute delays and ensure a hassle-free journey.
