Kazan hosts ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit

• The ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit was held in Kazan, Russia on June 17 and 18.
• It marked the 35th anniversary of ASEAN-Russia relations and the 30th anniversary of the ASEAN-Russia Dialogue Partnership.
• The summit was co-chaired by Philippines President and ASEAN Chair for 2026 Ferdinand Marcos Jr and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
• It adopted the Kazan Declaration.
• It calls for strengthened cooperation in various areas including maritime, trade and investment, energy, connectivity, security, education, and culture.
• Putin also held a series of bilateral meetings with ASEAN leaders during the summit.

• Kazan is the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan.
• Tatarstan is situated in the centre of the Russian Federation.
• It is located in the center of a large industrial area, 800 km east of Moscow, at the confluence of the Volga and Kama rivers.
• Kazan city stretches along two banks of the Kazanka river — at the place of its confluence with the Volga.
• In April 2009, the Russian Patent Office granted Kazan the right to be called the “third capital of Russia”.
• Kazan is also recognised as the “Sports Capital of Russia”.
What is ASEAN?
• The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was established on August 8, 1967 in Bangkok by five countries — Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.
• There are currently 11 member states: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam and Timor-Leste.
• The ASEAN Summit is the highest policy-making body in ASEAN comprising the heads of State or government of ASEAN member states. As per regular practice, the ASEAN Summit Meetings shall be held twice annually. The first ASEAN Summit was held in Bali, Indonesia on February 23-24, 1976.
• ASEAN is considered one of the most influential groupings in the region. India and several other countries, including the US, China, Japan and Australia, are its dialogue partners.
• Philippines is the ASEAN Chair for 2026, with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr leading the country’s chairmanship under the theme “Navigating Our Future, Together”.
