Should Kerala pay for IAS officers' domestic helps? | Onmanorama Explains

  • March 17 , 2026

On March 8, the LDF government issued an order sanctioning a stupendous increase in the Kerala All India Service Officers' Allowance. For principal secretaries and above and equivalent posts in the IPS and Indian Forest Service, the AIS allowance was increased from Rs 11,400 to Rs 38,340 a month, up by 236%. And for lower-ranked civil servants it was enhanced to Rs 19,170 from Rs 2900 rupees, a 561% hike.

This allowance was for three things. One, to engage an office assistant and domestic help. Two, for travel. And three, to pay water and electricity bills. They have secured this generous allowance just when the eighth pay commission is expected to double the basic pay of officers.
