Transparency sets IUML homes apart

  • April 28 , 2026

Wayanad is still living with the scars of the July 30, 2024 landslide. But at Vellithode in Meppadi panchayat, a different story is taking shape -- one of rebuilding done right.

In under seven months, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has completed 51 houses for families who lost everything in the Chooralmala–Mundakai disaster. These are part of a larger promise of 105 homes -- built on 11.5 acres, fully furnished, and designed for dignity, not just survival.

But what sets this project apart is not just speed.

It’s transparency.

This is a fully crowd-funded initiative. Over Rs 36 crore raised, and every rupee tracked through the 'For Wayanad' app. From land purchase to construction, from relief kits to livelihood support -- the spending is open for anyone to see.

Each house:

 • 1,060 sq ft on 8 cents

 • 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms

 • Fully furnished

 • Built at ~₹20 lakh

The project was designed free of cost by architect Tony Joseph.

There’s also a deeper story here -- of unity. Fourteen homes in the first phase went to Hindu families, given priority without a draw. Beneficiaries chose to move in together, waiting until every house was ready.

At a time when large public projects struggle with delays and opacity, this stands out.

Kudos to the Muslim League for setting a model of rehabilitation that combines speed, planning, and financial transparency, a model that's worth replicating beyond Wayanad.
