Why Kerala’s Fishermen Risk the ‘Mouth of Death’ | Onmanorama

Between the far ends of the north and south breakwaters of the Muthalapozhi harbour, where the Arabian sea and the Kadinamkulam lake meets, is the 'mouth of death'. In the last decade, 39 fishermen have died here. A combination of unscientific breakwater construction and sediment accumulation cause the tidal waves at the mouth to rise treacherously. Boats caught in the tumult are thrown to the sides. This video attempts to understand why fishermen risk their lives to cross the mouth into the deep sea.
